How to Tip the Dealer

Tipping is a hard subject for most gamblers to stomach and for gambling experts to talk about.  The only gamblers that don’t mind talking about tipping are online gamblers, as this is one thing they never have to worry about.  With too many tips, you could easily turn your winning profession into a financially losing venture.   As a gambler, however, you shouldn’t view the casino as an office or gambling as your livelihood.  Most gamblers view gaming as a type of entertainment.  And when you tip a coat-check assistant, restaurant server, valet, or cashier at a favorite coffee shop, giving gratuities to the service employees you find in the casino is customary.

Most of the casino staffs, like other employees in the service sector, rely strongly on the generosity of the customers they serve to supplement their salaries. Hard-working cocktails servers, bellhops, dealers, and the like depend on your financial support, so offering tips - or tokes, as they are known in gambling lingo - is a usual practice in the casino.

Although a few people feel that casino employees have become jaded - thirstily expecting (if not outright demanding) your tip whether or not their services justifies that - most staffers really strive to serve well and try to make your casino experience an enjoyable one. So be ready to tip a service provider; maybe you will increase your odds of establishing positive casino karma!

You could be familiar with giving tip to many of the service personnel you encounter each day. But dealers are quite unique to the casino world; therefore tipping them can pose a dilemma to a gambling beginner. How much do you give? When do you tip? How exactly does your cash change hands? Dealers make a big portion of their income from gambler tips. But casinos do not work the way your favorite restaurant works. When your order comes on time and the server remembers to put your horseradish on the side, the extra dollar you toss her goes directly into her pocket. However, casino tips are nearly always pooled, and with some good reasons.

  • Pooling rules out any direct bonus for a dealer to cheat illegally on behalf of a casino visitor.
  • Pooling offers equality for all dealers, some of whom work at low-end tables while other dealers get the high-rollers who easily toss a hundred bucks chips around.

Tips are frequently pooled based on shifts, which will allow an easy daily calculation for every dealer who worked at the same shift.

If you believe you can get by without tipping the dealer, you may be astonished to experience the overt pressure to tip at your table. A few dealers are out-and-out rude when a winner neglects to share his good fortune. Then the first question would be, under what situations is a tip to the dealer expected? The regular practice is to tip when you are winning, but winning or losing has absolutely nothing to do with the dealer. Tipping can be a way of showing your appreciation, but it does not change your odds, help your gambling career in the future, or get you better cards. Your gratuities only change the way dealers, pit bosses, and players treat you while you are sitting at your table. So if you wish to be loved, just tip generously whether you lose or win.

The commonly used method of passing the tip to your dealer is putting an extra bet at the front of a regular bet. You may also put any amount on top of the bet for the dealer. Adding the tip to your bet essentially makes the dealer a partner with you on that hand. The dealer usually enjoy being able to take part in the game. It is also common to give your dealer a chip when you leave the game after collecting your winning. Dealers frequently have you color up (convert your smaller denomination chips for higher value chips) before you leave the game, so be sure you set aside a few small chips for your dealer before this process.

I always wondered if the dealers preferred the tip or you to bet the tip for them. I admit I don’t tip when I am losing as it just increases my losses.

    Hi James,

Thanks for the comment. I mainly play poker, so I find it easier to tip as your only tip when you win a real pot. A real pot is one that does not just include the blinds. The standard amount to tip is $1.
